Hello friends! Touching base in the few minutes of fuss-free, baby-is-sleeping, calm-before-the-chaos ensues. Wow! I don’t know where to begin except to say how incredible these past few weeks have been. Hop is growing big and strong, extra cuddly and loving, and more curious than ever. I, on the other hand, am still trying to figure out how to type one-handed, make a pot of coffee before lunch, answer emails the same day, and a bevy of otherwise mundane but seriously important things like getting out of the house!
On a side note, after my hiatus I have some exciting new things to unveil. A new kids blog and a couple Sage & Style weekly feautures I think you’ll really like.
Watch for this in the next week or two; in the meantime here’s a pic of our noodle … week 3.

hi, i’m hopper

Here he is—our little noodle. Eleven days old, incredibly cuddly, totally sweet and the biggest, loving handful we’ve ever experienced.
Eleven days of unbelievable love, hard work, cry fests and devotion. Eleven days of sleep deprivation, amazing support, loving family and fantastic friends. BCL and I are head-over-heels and can’t wait to share more. In the meantime, Hop says hi with his big guns blazing.

round two … award season

A few weeks back I blogged about winning an award for the Detroit Home picnic cover, which I styled a while back. Well, to my utter surprise, I was just notified that a second shoot I worked on for Detroit Business also won an award! Our “Restaurants for Business” feature won the silver medal for Best Feature layout from “The Alliance of Area Business Publications.” Hooray! I’m attributing this to our super talented team which also includes Roy Ritchie (photography) and Jessica Decker (design)– both incredibly talented pros who I continually have the the pleasure to work with.

I was so excited to join Sarah’s guest blogger series “Summer Destinations” on her fab blog Where The Sidewalk Begins. Sarah asked that her collaborators choose a destination and then base a style board around it. Well as you all know, I can never refuse a style board so of course I said YES!Above is the inspiration for my “event”—the Traverse City Film Festival. BCL and I are SO EXCITED to announce the birth of our new little man, Hopper “Hop” Higgins LaFlamme who arrived Monday at 9:42 am. We’re currently cuddling, recouping and learning all about our new addition, the sweetest, most loving little charmer this side of newborn.
You can imagine how eager I am to share our experience, more photos (how do you ever stop taking them moms!?) and of course all the details as the weeks progress. In the meantime, we’ll be on a short hiatus but back very soon.
PS: Above is Hop’s announcement, which we eblasted to our nearest and dearest. Isn’t it fab? My awesome friends over at Paper Nickle Stamp custom-made it with a Chicago urban spin.

happy father’s day

Happy Father’s Day to all my favorite dads (including my own awesome step dad who’s missing out on one of his biggest regatta’s next week to come meet his new grandson!) I don’t think I ever appreciated Father’s Day so much as this year, when I realized we could actually be celebrating for our very first time. If you’ve been following the developments of our soon-to-be son, we still aren’t sure if BCL will officially be cuddling his newborn tomorrow (he’s now overdue by 5 days!) or if we’ll be toasting without him.
With that being said, I was going to do a gift guide this week, but seeing as we’re down to the wire I thought instead I’d share a “day of treats” post, where I cover what I would hope to do if we weren’t in baby limbo.
First up … I’d make my gluten free husband a huge French omelet with lots of smoked ham and cheese. After a leisurely breakfast, we’d be off as a family to scour the Green City Market for some dinnertime goodies. A spot of lunch al fresco with a picnic in the park, and then back home to unwind with a little online Monopoly. Finally, another awesome meal prepared on the grill with a huge helping of spicy Mexican hot chocolate gelato from Black Dog as the finale.

Today feels like a throwback kind of day. Perhaps it’s all these articles I’m reading about the movie version of The Help (those costumes, that hair!) or the basil lemonade I just drank; a recipe, explained the shop owner, which came straight from a 1950s cookbook. Or maybe it’s the soothing hue of mint green mixed with lace and red poppies … the perfect accent on a breezy summer day. However you have it, I’m feeling it … and only wish I could toss one of these on for my afternoon, neighborhood stroll.

For those of you who don’t know, today is my official due date! Our little boy should be coming any minute and in response to the anxiety of the unknown (when will it happen?!) I’ve been trying to keep myself busy. Case in point; today I tackled a few outstanding projects while listening to the the Junior Boys new album It’s All True. Have you heard it? Fantastic! One of my favorite songs is Banana Ripple which also inspired today’s vibrant yellow post. The song’s beat makes me want to get moving … whether that’s re-arranging our balconies, going for a long walk or simply bopping along in my desk chair. Of course it also makes me want to run out and get a banana popsicle from Whole Foods—which I discovered the other day, to my $2.50 chagrin.
